Keep Your Laptop From Walking Away

There is a lot being made of computer security and keeping your computer safe from viruses, SPAM, spy-ware and more. There is plenty of good reason to pay attention to this, as online criminals are more prevalent and more damaging. But it is important to keep the more classical security thoughts in mind, such as not having someone physically take your laptop. All the anti-virus software and firewalls in the world will be of no help to you if your laptop is in the possession of someone else.

Using a laptop is very convenient and gives you Internet connectivity options that you never had before. But they are a very expensive item that is also very easy to steal. All the reasons laptops are so great are the same reason that make them so easy to steal. There are some measures that you can take in order to lessen the risk that your laptop will be stolen.

One of the most common forms of laptop security is a security cable that can be connected to your computer and then fastened to an immovable object. Just the sight of the cable can make a potential thief move on to another, less protected laptop that will be less of an obstacle. The first thing you must know when looking for one of these cables is whether or not your laptop has a Universal Security Slot (USS). Most of the laptops created today have this slot that will allow you to securely attach a cable to your laptop. If your computer doesn’t have this feature, there are some cables that are produced with an adhesive attachment for your computer. While not as effective as a security cable that connects with a USS, it is still a nice option and could save you simply by serving as a deterrent. Keep in mind the type of lock you are getting, as some are better than others. Tubular cylinder locks are preferred to tumbler locks because the cylinder locks are not as easily picked as tumbler locks.

Another options for when you have to leave your computer in your car or house is a protective case. Many of these look like steel briefcases that have a security cable connected to them. You can attach this cable to something stable and lock your belongings in the case. These are especially helpful if you travel a lot with your laptop.

If you are seeking something that is easier to carry and more technical, there are a few alarm options that you can attach or install on your computer. You can find proximity alarms that are used to keep the laptop close to its user. The alarm will sound when the sensor on your computer gets too far from the sensor on the user. Other electronic sensors are simply designed to sound an alarm when the computer is moved. These are exceptional for crowded, public areas. If you like to work in public areas or you are forced to, one of these options could prevent theft. People are not used to hearing loud alarms in public areas, and it will undoubtedly bring unwanted attention to a thief.
