Laptop Training to Get Yourself in the 21st Century

Laptop training is very similar to training for a desktop computer. It would seem to be almost the same. It seems oddly strange to me that people worry at all about learning how to use a laptop. Laptops are designed to essentially be the same as your desktop, but you have the convenience of taking it wherever you want to. Laptop training shouldn’t be anything that takes up too much of your time or is overly complicated. A simple CD or online tutorial from Video Professor can teach you how to use your laptop in about 3 hours. It’s laptop training as it should be, quick and easy.

If you have a laptop or you are thinking about getting a laptop, you are probably doing so in large part to have Internet access almost anywhere you go. Setting up an Internet connection on your laptop is simple and you have a couple of options. You can easily set up a high-speed cable Internet connection if you are looking for something very basic. The problem with this is that you are limited to your home because you need to be connected to your cable modem. But, it does give you a speedy Internet connection that is reliable and gives you a little mobility within your home.

The best option is setting up a wireless Internet connection. Most laptop training will give you some hints on how to set up a wireless Internet connection in your house. Another nice technological innovation is that most new laptops have wireless connectivity built in. Just a couple of years ago you had to spend another $50 or more on a wireless network adapter to connect to a wireless network. As technology evolves and the prices get driven down, the consumer benefits. You might even get lucky enough to live somewhere where you can connect to a wireless network for free. More and more public places are setting up wireless Internet so you can work from a lot of different places, and you can grab an Internet connection out of the sky wherever there is an open network. Laptop training will break down the steps of setting up the kind of Internet connection you need and show you some of the security measures that you should take concerning the Internet. The Internet is great and it can make life convenient for you, but you should take some extra steps to make sure your information is secure when you are online.

Another item that is important to consider, and that laptop training will go into greater detail on, is what type of processor to look for. There are essentially two types of processors to consider. You can find a single-core or dual-core processor. The processor is essentially the brain of your computer and transfers information into actions or orders to execute. The dual-core processor basically has the ability to process twice the amount of information of a single-core. Laptop training will explain what you should look for depending on what you need from your computer, but suffice to say a dual-core processor will perform a lot more quickly.

Vacation Packages Even You Can Afford!

Vacation time. It can be oddly stressful. Counting pennies, overusing the credit card and getting that lovely sunburn on your back can leave you asking yourself why you didn’t just stay home. Well, next year, don’t let your vacation be the cause of stress, with vacation packages, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Where To Go

You might be asking yourself, “What’s up with vacation packages? What are they?” Well, I am glad you asked. Vacation packages range from luxury safaris in Africa and ski trips in the Rocky Mountains to simply relaxing on the beach with the family. A vacation package is a way to book a vacation and include all the activities you want. That means, when you arrive, all the plans are already taken care of, all you have to do is show up!

So find your niche vacation. What is it that you love to do? Do you love hiking, there are vacation packages for hikers, do you love relaxing on the beach, there are vacation packages for you too! From the extreme to the serene, there is a vacation package to fit your needs and interests.

What To Get

Vacation packages can include activities, or they can simply give you hotels, rental cards and airline ticket deals. It can be much cheaper to book those together rather than separate. Try looking around web sites like Orbitz.com or Travelocity.com, they have great vacation packages that will make booking your vacation a one stop, no-hassle experience. When you book a vacation package, you are essentially thinking ahead. If you know where you are going to be, and how long you are going to be there, finding a vacation package will help you be better organized before you arrive, therefore more relaxed once you get there.

What To Do

Go online and do a little research, find out what makes your vacation destination special, why do people like going there? Doing a little bit of online snooping, you will be able to find hundreds of fun things to do at your destination, and with a vacation package, you can get tickets and reserve your spots ahead time. Going to New York City? Book a vacation package that include the double decker red bus tour and a show on Broadway! Going to the beach? Book a vacation package that includes sailing and hikes around the local places of interest. If you want to do it, chances are, someone else does too. So go for it, book the vacation package of your dreams and leave the worry before the trip. Once your feet touch ground on your vacation, the only thing you should be worrying about is where your drink is.

Computers in Today’s Society

I Can See You, Can You See Me?

Last week my sister bought a webcam, and it was about time. I own a Mac, so my computer came with a little camera, but not all of us are lucky enough to own such a fine piece of machinery and therefore have to go to the store and buy a webcam. My sister lives in Egypt. That’s very far away. I haven’t seen her in about 8 months, if you don’t count photos she has posted on Facebook. So, I have been bugging her to get a webcam. They are inexpensive and so much fun. I gave her a tour of my new apartment with my webcam and showed her my friends and neighborhood. Technology today is awesome, plain and simple. I can’t imagine the days when letters were how people communicated. You had to wait around for weeks to hear from people you loved, and if they lived across the oceans…forget about it. Although, how many people really lived abroad in those days, so maybe that doesn’t work as well as I want it to. Either way, even though my sister lives literally on the other side of the world, I can talk to her, almost face to face and hear her voice at the same time.

So this week, I praise the webcam. I love it. Its cute looking, like a mini Cyclops atop your computer, and it has these little feet so its more of a bird Cyclops that you love, just perching on your monitor.

So, a little history. The webcam fist came around at Cambridge University in 1991. It is infamously known as the Trojan Room Coffee Pot camera. The story goes like this (according to Wikipedia), “The coffee pot was located in the so-called Trojan Room within the old Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. The webcam was created to help people working in other parts of the building avoid pointless trips to the coffee room by providing, on the user’s desktop computer, a live 128x128 grayscale picture of the state of the coffee pot.”

Do you think they ever thought that webcams would become a major tool in the business world, security and in our social lives? I bet they did, but probably not at first, or at least not to the extent it is today.

Webcams connect people when they otherwise cannot be together. I heard a story about a man stationed in Iraq who was able to watch the live birth of his daughter via webcam. Although he couldn’t be there, he could still feel present, and talk to his wife during the birth. Technology can do great things and while many people think that it is creating a gap and depersonalizing the world, I think it can also bring people together. And that’s why I love the webcam.

Find Vacation Travel Deals Online

Traveling is something that pretty much everyone wishes they did more of. Less work and more vacation sounds good, unless you are a marginally insane workaholic. It’s great to get out and see different places, people and cultures. The problem is that vacations cost money. Depending on the vacation, it can cost a lot of money. Sometimes a trip that goes wrong can bring you a plethora of unexpected costs. The good news is that the Internet has made it much easier to find vacation travel deals.

The huge amount of travel web sites has created competition and driven travel costs down, making it much easier to find vacation travel deals. I won’t take a vacation if I don’t feel like I am getting a good deal on a flight or a hotel because I feel like it is so easy to find vacation travel deals. Between package deals, last minute deals and online bargaining, there are too many ways to find vacation travel deals. Plenty of sites allow you to submit your own price and then they find the deals that match your budget.

Vacation packages can be a great way to save some money and provide you with a great amount of convenience that wasn’t available just a few years ago. You used to have to book your flight through the airline, find a hotel and reserve your room with them, find a rental car at the right rate, and look for activities at your vacation destination. Now there are web sites where you can find vacation travel deals that include all of these things and give you a nice discount for buying them all together. A lot of sites have multiple packages for popular destinations. Rather than reserving all the necessities from multiple companies and then wasting precious vacation time trying to figure out what to do, you can take care of all these obligations at one site.

Traveling during weekdays or during designated down times can also be a great way to find vacation travel deals on flights and hotel rooms. The busy travel times are no secret to anyone, especially people in the airline and hotel business. They know that they can charge extra at these times, because so many people can only vacation during the popular times. There can be plenty of advantages to traveling during non-busy periods. Along with finding nice vacation travel deals, you will also have to deal with fewer other people. Popular attractions, traffic, hotels and so much more will be less crowded and more enjoyable if there are fewer tourists to contend with. Most popular travel web sites have their rates mapped out on a calendar so you can easily tell when the best times are to get vacation travel deals.

Another convenient facet to these web sites is that you can create an account with them which will streamline your vacation planning and give you first access to vacation travel deals. These sites will send you weekly travel discounts and offer you special package deals. So, if you travel a lot or have the luxury of being able to plan a last minute vacation, you might want to create an account at your favorite travel site and gain access to some great discounts.

The World is a Battlefield, What Level Mage Are You?

If you know a guy, chances are you have heard of World of Warcraft. First introduced in 1994, Blizzard Entertainment hit the jackpot with this now hugely popular multiplayer game. And with the advent of high speed Internet and the price of computers dropping, more and more people can log on and play World of Warcraft. This isn’t a game, many gamers will tell you, it’s a way of life. So, those kids who play for hours a day, literally losing themselves in an enchanted world must find something enticing. Video games have always been an escape, but what is it about World of Warcraft that gets people so fired up?

“World of Warcraft is one of the most addicting games you’ll ever play. Blizzard’s first foray into the MMORPG genre puts you in the position of a member of one of 8 races and 9 classes,” explains Link006, a videogame blogger. Andrew Moffat, a World of Warcraft enthusiast says,” The first thing I look for when buying a game like this is the size of the world you are playing in. At first, when I opened the world map I thought the world looked quite small, but then I realized I was viewing only a 20th of the map.” He continues to say, “The actual game play is fantastic too. Your character is part of a hugely impressive world, where learning curve is right on the spot. Your character advances at a rate, that is neither too fast nor too slow and tedious, meaning you can be hooked to the screen for hours.”

And while it might be hard to not judge that these kids sit on their computers for hours a day, there is something to be a said about a game that can create a global community. But how does game play work? I went to Wikipedia to find out:

There are two types of characters in the game: Player Characters (PCs, or simply "characters") and Non-Player Characters (NPCs). A Player Character is an avatar in the world of Azeroth that is controlled by a player. The color of a PC’s name tag can be blue, green, yellow or red depending on faction and Player vs. Player (PvP) status. Non-Player Characters are controlled by the game software and can only interact with PCs through scripted events or artificial intelligence (AI).”

Ok, so let me get this straight, you are a PC and everyone else is an NPC, and this world of Azeroth, what is this place? I think before I continue I should play a little myself. My goal: For my next blog I will have played World of Warcraft for at least 10 hours so I can see what all the hype is about. It may not be the biggest or most important plan I have resolved to do, but hey..why not?

Learn Laptop Basics and Stay Ahead of the Curve

More and more people are going for laptops for the convenience and portability they offer. Many laptops are capable of performing the same tasks as desktop computers and get the job done just as quickly. Once you learn some of the laptop basics to consider, you can select the laptop that is best for you. Using a laptop is fairly similar to a desktop computer, but there are some differences to keep in mind. Take some time to learn some laptop basics, and you will soon be able to take advantage of a computer that allows you to work anywhere. Laptops are constantly becoming more affordable and more capable, so take advantage of the advancing technology and never be glued to your desk again.

The first aspect to consider when looking for a laptop is what type of processor you need. There are two types to think about. You have a choice between dual and single core processors. Dual-core processors can handle multiple tasks at one time while single core processors can only handle one task at a time. Laptops with dual core processors will be able to work more quickly and handle more commands at once. The processor is sort of like the brain of your computer. It takes information for you and completes tasks. This can be anything from basic math commands, to running complex programs. One of the mandatory laptop basics is to know which kind of processor you need. If you use video or photo editing programs a lot, perform multiple tasks at once, or just need your computer to always be fast, you should get a laptop with a dual core processor. If you just need a laptop for light use and don’t demand too much from your computer, then you could get away with using a single core processor. Single core processors cost less, so if you are only into laptop basics, this could be enough for you.

Another of the laptop basics that is important to consider is the amount of memory you need. More specifically, look into how much Random Access Memory (RAM) a potential computer has. RAM provides temporary storage for files that programs use as they run on your computer. The more RAM your computer has, the faster it will be able to execute commands and the more programs it will be able to run efficiently at the same time. If you are looking to perform very basic tasks like using the Internet and some basic office programs, then 1 GB of RAM might be enough for you. If you play advanced games or perform a lot of video and photo editing, you need to look for a computer with more RAM, at least 2 GB. You can also add more RAM to your computer as you need your computer to do more, but make sure your laptop has the right slots to add memory chips. Having enough memory is one of the easy laptop basics to ensure your computer performs the way you need it to.

There are plenty of other laptop basics to consider, such as the size of your hard drive, networking options for the Internet and the size of your laptop and screen. Make sure you know which laptop basics are important to you and make your decision based on that.

Keep Your Laptop From Walking Away

There is a lot being made of computer security and keeping your computer safe from viruses, SPAM, spy-ware and more. There is plenty of good reason to pay attention to this, as online criminals are more prevalent and more damaging. But it is important to keep the more classical security thoughts in mind, such as not having someone physically take your laptop. All the anti-virus software and firewalls in the world will be of no help to you if your laptop is in the possession of someone else.

Using a laptop is very convenient and gives you Internet connectivity options that you never had before. But they are a very expensive item that is also very easy to steal. All the reasons laptops are so great are the same reason that make them so easy to steal. There are some measures that you can take in order to lessen the risk that your laptop will be stolen.

One of the most common forms of laptop security is a security cable that can be connected to your computer and then fastened to an immovable object. Just the sight of the cable can make a potential thief move on to another, less protected laptop that will be less of an obstacle. The first thing you must know when looking for one of these cables is whether or not your laptop has a Universal Security Slot (USS). Most of the laptops created today have this slot that will allow you to securely attach a cable to your laptop. If your computer doesn’t have this feature, there are some cables that are produced with an adhesive attachment for your computer. While not as effective as a security cable that connects with a USS, it is still a nice option and could save you simply by serving as a deterrent. Keep in mind the type of lock you are getting, as some are better than others. Tubular cylinder locks are preferred to tumbler locks because the cylinder locks are not as easily picked as tumbler locks.

Another options for when you have to leave your computer in your car or house is a protective case. Many of these look like steel briefcases that have a security cable connected to them. You can attach this cable to something stable and lock your belongings in the case. These are especially helpful if you travel a lot with your laptop.

If you are seeking something that is easier to carry and more technical, there are a few alarm options that you can attach or install on your computer. You can find proximity alarms that are used to keep the laptop close to its user. The alarm will sound when the sensor on your computer gets too far from the sensor on the user. Other electronic sensors are simply designed to sound an alarm when the computer is moved. These are exceptional for crowded, public areas. If you like to work in public areas or you are forced to, one of these options could prevent theft. People are not used to hearing loud alarms in public areas, and it will undoubtedly bring unwanted attention to a thief.

The Internet Plays an Increasingly Greater Role in the Electoral Process

Has it been four years already? Or maybe for you, it feels like the longest four years ever since the last presidential election. Regardless how you may feel about the past four years, there is little debate that this election is of the utmost importance. And there is definitely no question that, more than any other election, we are completely saturated with information, which when deciding on the next president of the United States is not necessarily a bad thing.

Sure, in the last election, Americans were all over the Internet, that is no question, but four years has resulted in numerous online booms, including a blog boom and a social networking boom, not to mention the use of search engines by Americans to find any information on any candidate. Also, almost all newspaper and television news channels have created online versions that not only include what was in the printed/aired version, but also include constant updates, thorough archives and helpful links. It is really an era of “no stone left unturned.”

Not that long ago, the only place potential voters could get information on their candidates was from, dare I say, biased TV commercials and/or reports in the newspapers from campaign speeches and such. My, how the tides have turned. With the creation of blogs and forums, the American people really have their chance and their turn, for that matter, to say what they want and discuss what they want with others. Forums allow people to discuss and debate candidates with people from all over the country, or the world for that matter.

Also, candidates can and do reach so many more potential voters when they utilize the possibilities of the Internet. Of course, they do have their standard web sites, but they now have social networking pages to reach a whole different generation. Social networking sites also allow candidates to send out bulletins and information on a regular basis and to receive constant feedback and questions from younger people.

The flow of information and communication possibilities has never been as explosive as it is now. The 21st century has brought about new ways to learn about who we put in office. Granted, a lot of the information is opinion or skewed depending on who is putting it out there, but the point is that the more information we have, the better decisions we can make. The more you are aware about what is surrounding our candidates, the more you can select who can represent you the best. Good luck this November!

Find an Internet Tutor and Explore the Online World

There are a lot of people who still don’t know how to use the Internet. It seems strange to those of us in the younger generations who use the Internet as an integral part of our daily lives. For those who aren’t that familiar with the Internet, there are ways in which you can learn and open yourself up to all the conveniences of the Internet. An Internet tutor is available in many different forms, from CD tutorials to online lessons to Internet tips. The Internet is a lot easier to learn than most computer programs or other new, digital devices. Once you get online with the help of an Internet tutor and get the feel for your browser, you can explore the Web and decide how much you want to use it.

There are a few key features to learn when it comes to the Internet. Some aspects that you might want to pay attention to when learning from an Internet tutor are security features, e-mail and search tips. Online criminals are more prevalent all the time, and they are searching for financial information or ways to gain control of your computer. If not financially harmful to you, online criminals can damage your computer’s performance and rob it of memory. You might want to get detailed information about your security options from an Internet tutor, especially if you are planning on shopping online frequently or working online.

Easier communication is one of the many advantages of using the Internet. E-mail is the most widely used form of communication in the online community, and it is relatively easy to set up. The right Internet tutor can show you all the important factors to consider when you are looking for and setting up an e-mail service. Most e-mail providers are pretty straightforward and provide many of the same features. An Internet tutor can even show you how to search for online reviews of different e-mail services.

Using a search engine is the main resource for finding information and web sites, but if you don’t know how to properly search for what you are looking for, you will certainly end up wasting plenty of time. Most Internet tutors, like the one offered by Video Professor, will give you some tips on how to enter the right keywords so you get the best results possible. Learn how to decipher between actual pages, advertisements and pages that are sponsored by the search engine.

Once you get comfortable with navigating your way around the Internet, there are an endless amount of options as to what you can do. The Internet is the new forum for every different form of entertainment. Movies, TV shows, magazines, video games and more are all transferring to the Internet in some form. In many cases, there are several different options for these forms of entertainment. All the news and information sources have online outlets, and they will likely only become more integrated online. Online shopping looks like it is going to overtake traditional shopping in terms of sales within a few years. Once you learn Internet basics with an Internet tutor, it will be relatively easy to find these other resources and plenty others that you never thought you would use.

Get Vacation Deals Online

I can’t imagine trying to plan a vacation without the Internet. Unless I am planning a road trip with no flights and no hotels, I have to use the Internet to book everything. I have trouble even thinking of the alternatives. Can you still call airlines to order plane tickets? Would that be efficient at all? Are there even very many travel agents in business? I honestly have no idea. It would seem to me that travel agents are essentially obsolete. You don’t even need an agent to get vacation deals anymore with all the online competition. Vacation planning web sites all want your business and offering cheap vacation deals is a great way to attract business. Unless you are rich enough to just pay a travel agent to take care of absolutely everything for you, I wouldn’t see the need for a travel agent. You can book your own flights, hotels, rental cars and more online and even bargain for great vacation deals.

Web sites like Expedia.com, hotels.com and travelocity.com have plenty of vacation deals, hotel, flight packages and much more. You can also get discounts by flying during slow times of the week or year. You can often find hotels for less than it would cost you if you went straight to the hotel. Get all of your vacation needs on one site. Another advantage is that you can compare many different offers from many different web sites much more quickly than if you were to do it any other way. You don’t have to tell your travel agent what you want and then wait for a couple days in order to find out what your options are. With this method you also run the risk of not being satisfied with your results, but when you search for vacation deals online, you can quickly move on from anything you don’t like. Take virtual tours of hotel rooms before you book the room, rather than dialing up the hotel and guessing what the room might look like.

It’s amazing how quickly you can make trip plans today. If I wanted to leave for Brazil tomorrow and return on Sunday, I could book that flight in less than ten minutes. I would need about $1,600, but I could do it. There are special packages and vacation deals for popular destinations that are ready to go. There are several packages to Las Vegas that include airfare and two nights stay and some of the vacation deals are priced under $250. It’s nice for that relaxing get away or business trip to Vegas. I’ve heard all about the crazy Vegas business trips.

Just in case you have the luxury of being able to pick up and go to Europe on a whim, there are vacation deals to several European cities on numerous web sites that include airfare and four or five nights lodging. Barcelona, Rome, Paris, Dublin and Amsterdam are just a few of the cities that have pre-arranged vacation deals that you can book very quickly, grab your passport and head for Europe.
